We've procrastinated for two months about posting this, basically because we always seem to get complaints when we post stories about cartoon that were actually produced as film shorts, but later became incorporated into regularly running TV shows. We saw this with
Looney Tunes DVD news, and then with
Tom & Jerry DVD news. A good chunk of our readers appreciate the info, but a significant number of people also complain that we're talking about something that isn't really a "television." We've struggled with this even moreso with a DVD release titled "
Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection," but in the end we decided that most people under 50 were first exposed to these cartoons on television, probably as part of the
Tom and Jerry program. So why ignore it? If you're one of the people who don't think info about
Droopy cartoons originally produced for theaters does not belong on our site, well, stop reading now. Change the channel. Too many other readers seem to want more info about this release, so here we go. Cover art first:

Droopy, a detective basset hound, lulls the bad guys into a false sense of security by acting slow and dumb when in actual fact he is a genius. The shrewd Droopy always outwits his enemies! Droopy Dog was a low-key animated movie character created by Tex Avery at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1943, this mournful deadpan witty Basset hound detective who spoke in a jowly monotone voice and, though he didn't look like much, was shrewd enough to outwit his enemies - the conniving Butch the Irish bulldog and the thieving, nasty wolf and English Fox.
- Documentary: "Droopy and Friends: A Laugh Back" - a documentary retrospective featuring the highlights of Tex Avery's iconic character and band of regular misfits, which made the collection so memorable and dear to our hearts. Peppered through the featurette will be moments reflecting on Tex's early days, from inspiration, to his passions as an artist, entertainer and eventual auteur.
- Gag Reel: "Doggone Gags" - a montage of great moments from the Droopy series, culled together in the fashion of a gag reel.
