It's been a couple of months since Warner Home Video
officially announced the
October 19th release of
Tom and Jerry - Spotlight Collection: The Premiere Volume. A collection of movie shorts, some of them Oscar-winning, we have been talking this set up at TVShowsOnDVD because - like the
Looney Tunes shorts - these have been shown on television as part of a mainstream TV series:
the 1965-1972 run of
Tom & Jerry on CBS.
Thad Komorowski over at GoldenAgeCartoons.com's discussion forum has
posted a list of the cartoons that will be included on the
Spotlight Collection 2-DVD set. Let's let Thad do the talking:

Soon after that was posted this past Friday, a GoldenAgeCartoons.com forum member, Martin Juneau, posted his calculations that the above list contains 17 new-to-DVD shorts:
According to this list:
11/14 are already in Tom & Jerry's "Greatest Chases" DVD/VHS
5/10 in the "Wisker's Away" DVD/VHS
4/7 in the "Hijinks and Shrieks" DVD/VHS
2/7 in the "Paws for a Holiday" DVD/VHS
and 3/5 are extra cartoons in WB's family DVD
Only 17 T&J cartoons are most premiering on DVD
Good eye there, Martin! Don't forget, though, that previous DVD releases of individual cartoons may not have gone through the restoration process that these are supposed to have been subjected to. And it's best to have these collected in one place. Plus, there are various extras with this release as well:
- Jerry Dances with Gene Kelly {excerpt from Anchors Aweigh RT 8:00}
- Tom and Jerry Swim with Esther Williams {excerpt from Dangerous When Wet RT 7:44}
- Commentary by Jerry Beck on: "The Zoot Cat", "Kitty Foiled", and "Heavenly Puss"
- "Behind the Tunes: The MGM Orchestra" {new documentary on the music of Tom and Jerry RT 20:00}
- "How Bill and Joe Met Tom & Jerry" {new documentary on the origin of the series RT 27:00}
- Escalating rebate coupon inside each package allows consumer to save $5 if they buy any two Collectible Animation titles, or $10 if they buy any three.
That coupon isn't exactly an extra, we suppose, but it does help you save a bit off the $26.99 SRP cost of the set. Thanks to reader Dan Porceddu for letting us know about the GoldenAgeCartoons.com listing. We've been looking forward to this release, and we know you are, too!
