What is
Tokyo Pig? This Saturday-morning cartoon is Executive-Produced by Bob & Harvey Weinstein, who's EP credits also include television shows like
Clerks: The Animated Series and
Project Greenlight, and who's theatrical EP credits adorn the
Scream trilogy,
Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Shakespeare In Love, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Gangs of New York, Chicago, Bad Santa, Kill Bill, the
Spy Kids series, and a little something called
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. And that's barely the tip of the iceberg. Really. With The Weinstein Brothers backing it, you know it's not exactly your run-of-the-mill 'toon.
The show debuted in Sept. 2002 on the ABC Family channel, and
TVTome describes it this way:
Tokyo Pig is about a 9 year old kid named Spencer. After finding out the hard way that whatever he draws or writes into his journal comes to life, he decides to test his journals powers by drawing a blanket of pigs in the sky. To his amusement, it comes true and the next day there is an army of flying pigs in the sky. He decides to keep one and names him Sunny. He then finds out that Sunny has the power to make whatever Spencer imagines come to life. With this in mind, Spencer now has to control his wild and creative imagination before things get really out of hand.
We have gotten word that
Tokyo Pig is right now in DVD production, to be released later in 2004. Since ownership of the show is entirely in the hands of Disney/ABC/Mirimax, we presume that the release is coming from Buena Vista.
Stay tuned, and we'll update you when details are announced.
