Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 2003 Show's Nick Releases: 'NYC Showdown' and 'Search for Splinter'

Nickelodeon is (re-?)releasing two DVDs this summer from the 2003 '4Kids TV' series

Posted by David Lambert
When four pet turtles were bathed in ooze, they began to mutate and became the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Raised in New York City sewers by their foster father and martial-arts Master Splinter, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael wage war against crime. They stop evildoers in all forms, whether barbaric gangs, lowlife crooks, deranged cyborgs, or even the crime syndicate The Foot, led by their archrival, The Shredder.

The search is on in this totally rad value-pack! A Mousers attack has separated the Turtles from their master! But they get more than they bargained for when their search for Splinter leads them to a building connected with their mutation. Also, it's total Turtles action when Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey return to New York with one goal in mind: to destroy the Shredder once and for all. And this battle promises to be a fight to the finish!

The classic 2003 series of the hot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise returns to DVD with Volume 1 and Volume 2. Each single-disc volume includes 3 first season episodes filled with all the ninja action and comic-book adventure that TMNT fans love...released in time for summer and available at hot, low value pricing!
From 2003 to 2008, the 4Kids TV-broadcast series of "TMNT 2003" was released on DVD through Funimation, but releases from that studio ended - without the entire run of the show on disc! - when Nickelodeon picked up the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the lead-up to the current show, which debuted on Nick's cable channel in 2012. Nick released a DVD of the 2010 special, Turtles Forever, which featured a cross-over between the 2003 show's Turtle team and the original 1987 show's Turtles and their team. But that's been Nick's only DVD release related to the 2003 series up until now.

Nick's jumping into the action, though, with 2 new TMNT 2003 releases that are both scheduled for a June 9th street date. The studio description quoted in italics above has all the details we know about the contents of both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - NYC Showdown and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Search for Splinter. Does the second title sound very familiar, though? That's because Funimation released the identical title as "Volume 8" in their lineup back in mid-March 2004. On that same date 11 years ago, Funimation also released "Volume 7: Return To New York," and our suspicion - especially since the studio description says is that "[e]ach single-disc volume includes 3 first season episodes," is that Nick's upcoming "NYC Showdown" will be a re-release of that item, too.

Funimation's Volume 7: Return To New York actually came with four episodes of the 2003 show: "Monster Hunter" followed by "Return to New York Parts 1, 2 and 3"; the new "NYC Showdown" DVD from Nick could easily contain just the 3-part story in its 65-minute running time. And then the 65-minute re-release of "The Search for Splinter" could easily mirror the three episodes which aired next, "Lone Raph and Cub" (in which Master Splinter is discovered to be missing), and then "The Search for Splinter, Parts 1 and 2." That would mirror the same-titled Funimation release's featured contents perfectly. As does the image of Splinter that Nick is using on their cover art, shown below. The turtles shows behind Splinter are different poses, however, and the NYC Showdown art (also below) is quite different from Funimation's 7th Volume. Which is why we can only guess at the contents for now. But of course if we find out more then we'll update you, so stay tuned!
