Suspense, a premier anthology drama featuring stories of mystery and the macabre, was broadcast live from New York over the CBS Television Network beginning in 1949 and continuing on until 1954. Many top stars of Hollywood and Broadway appeared on Suspense including Charlton Heston, Paul Newman, Boris Karloff, Rod Steiger, Anne Bancroft, Jack Lemmon, John Forsythe, Brian Keith, Peter Lorre, John Carradine, Art Carney, Chester Morris, Leslie Nielsen, Hume Cronyn, Eddie Albert, Eva Gabor, Lloyd Bridges, Jackie Cooper, Jack Palance, Jack Klugman, George Reeves and Lee Marvin.
Before moving to television, it had been a weekly fixture on the CBS Radio Network from 1942 and remained that way for the next 20 years. The TV version successfully created the atmosphere of its radio predecessor by using that same identifiable opening announcement, "And now, a tale well calculated to keep you in...Suspense!" accompanied by the familiar Bernard Herrmann theme played on a Hammond organ. Suspense was originally aired LIVE but it has never been rerun in syndication, so it has not been seen since its original live run!
In association with CBS Enterprises, the Falcon Picture Group and Infinity Entertainment have recently uncovered 90 TV episodes of Suspense (all of which, until recently, were thought to be lost), direct from filmed kinescope masters.
The 90 episodes mentioned in the studio description above have come to DVD in three separate "lost episode collections" released between 2007 and 2009. Now Infinity and Falcon are teaming up to bring you all 90 of them in a single package that is labeled on the box as Suspense - The Ultimate Collection. Labeled by most retailers as " Collection 1, 2 & 3," this 12-disc set of digitally restored episodes (approx. 2580 minutes) arrives on May 19th, at a list price of $49.98 SRP. Infinity has kindly provided us with the first look at the package art, featuring pictures of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Rod Serling:
