We've
known for months (since September) that
March 28th will see the release of the Shout! Factory edition of
The Super Mario Brothers Super Show!. According to online retailers, it will be a 4-DVD set with a $29.98 SRP. You can pre-order for less, though: for instance,
Amazon is pre-selling it for just $20.99 (30% off).
Now we've gotten in the front and rear cover art for this long-awaited, highly anticipated release! The back of the box reveals a whole lot of great info about the content of this show. Here's the full text of the description on the rear of the packaging (which you can see pictured at the bottom):
Hey, Paisanos! It's The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
In 1989 the two most famous plumbers from Brooklyn burst out of the Nintendo game world and onto television screens across America. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! aired weekday afternoons and brought Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and King Koopa more thrilling adventures as animated cartoon characters.
And if that weren't enough, each episode also contained live-action segments featuring Mario and Luigi running their Brooklyn plumbing shop - all before they were flushed down a drainpipe into the Mushroom world. With professional wrestler Captain Lou Albano as Mario, Danny Wells as Luigi, plus a strong rock 'n' rap score, the show attracted guest stars like pop sensation Cyndi Lauper, professional wrestler Sgt. Slaughter, Danica McKellar (The Wonder Years), NBA superstar Magic Johnson and Nicole Eggert (Baywatch).
These 24 original episodes, complete with animation and live-action segments, plus the special features will convince you...
"Hangin' with the plumbers, you'll be hooked on the brothers..."
Special Features
- A Brand-New Interview with Captain Lou Albano ("Mario")
- Original Art Galleries
- Storyboard-to-Screen: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Opening Title Sequence
- And More!
Running time: Approx. 12 hours
It sounds great to us. "24 episodes" sounds like it will contain a little over a third of the overall run of DiC's show, which consists of 65 episodes. 13 of them were the
Legend of Zelda installments,
which have already been released separately. So our guess is that we can probably expect a "Volume 2" of
Super Mario down the line to bring us the remaining 28 episodes of the show. If that turns out to be accurate, then we'll certainly let you know about it when we get the word. So stay tuned!
