After wrapping up his work on the Terry and the Pirates
strip late the previous year, January 1947 saw Milton Caniff debut his popular and long-running newspaper strip Steve Canyon
...a strip that proved so popular that it was adapted into an adventure show in 1958, which aired on NBC and ran for 34 episodes during its only season. The rights to the show are in the hands of the Caniff estate, and they have some DVD ideas fans should know about!
Over at the "Steve Canyon on DVD" blog
, they are currently selling both commemorative hats and a 4-episode "best of"-style DVD called Steve Canyon - Special Edition
. The single-disc release, and the hats, are being sold to raise money for a restoration effort on the episodes. The goal is to release in 2008 a complete DVD set with all 34 episodes, fully restored from the original 35mm film masters (and hopefully to air the show on TV again as well).
If you want to suport that restoration work, you can donate through the blog or simply purchase a hat or the existing DVD. We obviously recommend buying the DVD as the best choice, because it might help hold you over until the complete series release happens. And, if it never happens for some reason, then you still have this disc! The blog notes that there are a limited number of DVDs (and hats, too). This disc costs $14.99 plus postage, and is not available in stores. Here is what you get:
