Recently we had an extensive story
reporting on the online-only availability of Steve Canyon - Special Edition
, a 4-episode DVD that hopefully would lead up to the release next year of a a complete DVD set, remastered from the original film prints, and containing all 34 episodes. At the time our best available knowledge was that the complete series release was still up-in-the-air and might not actually come through. Now we've been told it is definitely a "go"!
John Ellis, representing The Estate of Milton Caniff, has informed us that "there is no question that the full series on DVD will be released in 2008
." They are currently in the midst of negotiating for a distributor to include a domestic release; however, the agreement is not signed just yet. Therefore, there is no firm shipping date at this time, but their intention is to target the release of the entire series for the show's 50th anniversary in the Summer 2008
John continues his e-mail to us with the following update about the production status of the Steve Canyon
We just received (last week) the brand-spanking new film-to-tape transfers on episodes 19 through 33, and are awaiting special transfer work to be done on the original unaired version of the pilot film, on the remaining episode (which had been considered lost for some time), and some "bonus materials."
We are working on several documentaries for the series set, including a history of the show, a piece devoted to star Dean Fredericks, and one on creator Milton Caniff (and possibly one or two others). We are poring over many, many documents from the production for research. There's a lot happening, and we appreciate your kind words and suggestions.
As a little online "bonus" for the readers of TVShowsOnDVD, here is a frame grab of Leonard Nimoy and star Dean Fredericks from THE SEARCH (18th episode aired, Production #9222). This episode was run ONCE in the US on January 15th, 1959 and this picture has never before been printed. Enjoy!
Wow! Our sincere thanks to John Ellis for the update, and for the special picture seen below (with a pre-Star Trek
Leonard Nimoy). Stay tuned for further updates.
