In 2008, the legacy of
Stargate SG-1 continued with two new direct-to-video productions featuring the cast of the regular series, including "long-gone" stars of the show such as Richard Dean Anderson. Both
Stargate: The Ark of Truth (released on DVD in March 2008, and coming to Blu-ray in January 2009) and
Stargate: Continuum (released on DVD and Blu-ray in July 2008) carried on the storylines left hanging at the end of the 10th and final broadcast season, while taking us on exciting new adventures as well. MGM and distributor Fox haven't said whether any more are planned, but we know fans who have enjoyed these two stories hope that they manage to make more!
In the meantime, we wanted to let folks know that if you haven't picked these two up yet, then it might be worth waiting until
March 3, 2009 and pick them up together. MGM/Fox is releasing a special
Stargate - The Ark of Truth + Continuum Double Pack set on that date, in both DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc formats. Now, normally we wouldn't report on such a thing, because normally such a release would just be the two previously-released cases shrunk-wrapped together, with no special packaging. This time, though, MGM/Fox has decided to put these together into one plastic case holding multiple discs, with stylish new cover art that fits in nicely enough with both stories. Well, we suppose we'll let YOU be the judge of that; you can see each of them below.
And the pricing is better, too. Usually those shrinkwrap bundles we mention don't really have a lower list price compared to getting the titles separately (another reason we tend to leave off mentioning them here at the site). But the DVD release of this Double Pack set is just $29.98 SRP, and can be
pre-ordered from Amazon for $18.99 as of this writing. The Blu-ray Disc version of the Double Pack is $59.99 SRP, and you can
pre-purchase the Blu-ray release from Amazon for just $41.95 as of this writing. Note that Amazon's pricing is subject to change at their discretion. But if you lock it in now, then you'll be getting a good deal...perfect for anyone who hasn't picked either of these up yet. It may also be the way to go if Santa brings you a Blu-ray player under the tree, and you want to upgrade to the BD version of these films to go along with it!
