This past March the folks at MGM, through distributor Fox Home Entertainment, released
Stargate - The Ark of Truth, the direct-to-video story which picked up where the
Stargate SG-1 weekly series left off at the end of its 10th and final season. The feature was released only on DVD, while the follow-up direct-to-video feature
Stargate: Continuum was released on Blu-ray Disc, day and date in July with its own DVD version. A number of fans have said they would absolutely love to be able to upgrade to a high-definition Blu-ray version of
Ark of Truth.
Some rumors had circulated that a Blu-ray release of
Stargate - The Ark of Truth might be in the works, mostly due to
an Amazon listing telling readers to "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available." Unfortunately those types of pages at Amazon doesn't mean that a release is for-sure coming; it only means that Amazon is collecting names of potential customers, in case such an item (that people are doing searches at Amazon for) ever does get released. But now, it seems that there might be quite a bit more to it!
Inside-the-industry gossip has been passed along to us today from reliable sources. They tell us that MGM/Fox is indeed planning a high-def Blu-ray Disc version of
Stargate - The Ark of Truth. This release will happen early in 2009, probably in
January, we're told. No details or art are available yet, of course. But we would expect it to have at least all the same contents, including extras, as the DVD version. We also expect that pricing would probably be similar to the Blu-ray version of Continuum, which clocked in at $39.99 SRP. Those last couple of sentences are just guesswork, though...please take it with a grain of salt!
It DOES sound pretty solid to us, though, as rumors go (or else we wouldn' t be passing it along). Stay tuned, and we'll update you with more about this, as further developments occur!
