Back in January we
reported that MGM and their home video distributor, Fox Home Entertainment, were behind a fan poll to choose the top episodes which would be included in an upcoming
Stargate: Atlantis - Fan's Choice Blu-ray Disc release, coming out in the
Summer, 2009 timeframe. We apologize that we haven't kept up with it since then, but we'll make it up to you in a minute...we promise!
Since that poll ended, MGM/Fox and the people at the show have been holding an
"Atlantis by Design" contest, where users could design and submit their own cover art layout for the upcoming BD release. The episodes that will be on that high-def disc are "Enemy at the Gates" and an Extended Edition of "Rising," so fans who participate should probably be thinking about those episodes in putting a cover together. However, the contest deadline is tomorrow (3/13) at a second before Noon (Eastern Time Zone), having been going on since Valentine's Day. Again, we're very sorry we haven't kept our readers informed...it got by us, and - surprisingly! - none of the fans out there nudged us with any reminder e-mails. But still, it's certainly not anyone's fault except for ours.
So we're going to make it up to you, with the scoop about when you can buy the final season set of the show on DVD. We've just gotten word from our industry contacts that MGM/Fox is planning a release date of
June 30th for
Stargate: Atlantis - The Complete 5th Season. The planned cost is $69.98 SRP for a 5-disc set, and as usual it will come with extensive bonus materials: audio commentary tracks, photo galleries, production design galleries, featurettes and deleted scenes. It's too early for specifics on those extras yet, though, and also too early for cover art. But stay tuned and we'll bring that info to you just as soon as we can get our mitts on 'em!
