Yesterday our good friend Bill Hunt, who runs TheDigitalBits.com,
posted a Rumor Mill update that went over a number of upcoming Blu-ray Disc releases from Paramount. While these posts usually have concentrated on hi-def film titles, this time Bill slipped in a TV-on-BD release, too! He's got the early word that Paramount Home Entertainment is setting a course for
Star Trek - Season 2 on Blu-ray for release on
September 22nd (which happens to be the day of the autumn equinox this year). That's not set in stone, though, so we're not putting it on our official schedule here just yet. But Bill's got a pretty dang good track record for these things.
Bill goes on to say this about BD releases of the remaining films in the franchise: "
What's more, the Star Trek: The Next Generation - Original Motion Picture Collection (which will include Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis) is planned for release sometime in November or December, timed to coincide with the DVD/Blu-ray release of J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek (still TBA)" We've heard very solidly that the same time as those releases, we'll also get the Blu-ray Disc version of
Star Trek - Season 3 as well, the final season of the original series.
For our part, though, we've also heard from our sources that fans may actually see all of this high-def
Trek in late October - possibly the 27th, just before Halloween - because of some Blu-heavy release plans from various studios in the month of November (in the run-up to holiday sales). Rumors from my retail contacts say that November could see franchise releases on BD that ought to include the likes of
Lord of the Rings, Rocky and maybe even the first three
Indiana Jones films...all in time for "Black Friday"!! Take all of this with a HUGE grain of salt. But if it's accurate, then it could mean that Paramount would release the
Star Trek titles on Blu-ray - including
Season 3 - in October, in an effort to spread out all these franchise releases a bit (so consumers don't run into a wallet crunch too fast).
It's definitely all in the "rumor" category, so don't take any of it to heart just yet. We'll be back with the solid and official info, once it's available, so stay tuned...and keep your hailing frequencies open.
