Yesterday we
reported about CBS/Paramount's announcement for the
December 15th release of
Star Trek - Season 3 on high-def Blu-ray Disc. The information included a long list of bonus material, including an item described as "Where No Fan Has Gone Before: The Restored, Unaired Alternate Pilot Episode." We jumped to the conclusion that this referred to the much-wanted pilot "The Cage," but according to a mid-day report at TheDigitalBits.com today, we were off somewhat.
They passed along word from
Trek graphic designer Michael Okuda, who says that
The Cage should indeed be included on the set, even though it wasn't mentioned on the studio's list of extras...and that the supplement in question actually refers to a rare cut of the second pilot episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (hence the "where no fan..." title on the extra). Here's a portion of the report from Bill Hunt:
I asked longtime Trek veteran Mike Okuda what Where No Fan Has Gone Before might be, and he responded thusly: "It is the original cut of Where No Man Has Gone Before, the second pilot episode. The reassembled original cut of The Cage is also supposed to be included."
Our thanks to our friend Bill for the clarification on that; it will be a relief to everybody to know that "The Cage" is on there, and cool for longtime Trekkies to actually see something new. One of our readers, Michael Rosenberg, sent us a note telling us more about this alternate cut of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (which was the first time we saw Captain James Kirk), According to Rosenberg, "
it is structured differently (in 'acts'), and has some different camera angles here and there." Fascinating. Our thanks to him for those cool additional details!
Amazon isn't taking pre-orders for this title just yet, but DVDEmpire is, if you would like to lock in your copy with them:
