CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment have been showing off box art sneak peeks
for months now of
Star Trek - Season 2 (and season three) on high-def Blu-ray Disc. And even when they distributed their
official press release for the
September 22nd BD release of the 2nd Season, the same variation of the artwork was all that was available to retailers, including Amazon. And, to this day, even though it's clearly coming out in just under a month, the studio still (for some reason) hasn't listed the title (or artwork) at their online password-protected press site (the punster in me calls that an "over-site").
That early artwork, for both the 2nd and 3rd season Blu-ray sets, colored the boxes in blue to signify the Science/Medical section of the ship's personnel, and then red to denote with the Engineering/ Operations/Security section of the crew. However, the arrowhead insignia shown - very large! - on the covers of both instead contained the starburst symbol that is associated with the Command group among the ship's staff. That was appropriate for the yellow coloring of the first season Blu-ray Disc set, but not the blue or red colors. The blue-shirts should have an "eyeball"/sphere symbol on their arrowhead insignia, and the red-shirts are supposed to show off a "tilted spiral" pattern.
Yes, I realize that this is an extremely in-depth, geeky thing to be worried about. But it seems like one of my fellow Trekkies has now filled in the studio about this disconnect, because yesterday our friends at The Digital Bits
reported that the
Star Trek - Season 2 Blu-ray Disc package art had been updated to have the proper Science/Medical spherical symbol placed on the arrowhead insignia, to go with the blue background art on the box. At their site, though, they only had a small, flat look at the updated box art, but we asked around to our friends in the retail world, and with extreme thanks to one of them we managed to get our hands on a larger, 3D high-resolution look at the same updated packaging. Enjoy!
