Single-disc release coming in mid-May to tie in with the new feature film

Yesterday we reported that a single-disc release of Star Trek - The Best Of (The Original Series) will come out on May 12th, sporting 4 episodes of the 1966 series that would be priced, according to Video Business, at $14.99. This morning CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment have provided the front and rear package art for this item, giving us lots of new details. The episodes included are:
  • "The City on the Edge of Forever"
  • "The Trouble with Tribbles"
  • "Balance of Terror"
  • "Amok Time"
These episodes are taken from the first and second seasons of the three-season show. Running time is 201 minutes. Video is in the original full frame aspect ratio, with audio in English 5.1, Spanish Mono and Portuguese Mono. English, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles are on board, and it is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. No bonus material is included, as this is apparently not aimed at collectors but more at the casual fan, who might spot this in a display near the check-out line at a grocery store or drug store...especially with the new Star Trek film in theaters to tie in with. But it will also be available from other retailers, including Amazon (who hope to have a pre-order link shortly), for anyone who wants this included in their Star Trek DVD collection.

In addition, for yesterday's separate report about the high-definition Blu-ray Disc release of Star Trek - Season 1, we showed package art from TrekMovie.com which was slightly different than the package design we had seen in smaller shots previously. This morning CBS/Paramount also provided finalized front art for the BD collection, coming out on April 28th, and it's a little different than yesterday's picture (and almost identical to the previous smaller shots). Just to set the record straight, we show that picture at the bottom (a 7-disc "Amaray Blu" case with an outer "o-ring" card). The studio also confirms that there will indeed be subtitles with the Blu-ray season set: English, French and Portuguese. Glad we could clear that up!
