It's been a month since we
reported that we saw good signs at Paramount's password-protected press site that
Star Trek: The Animated Series was headed for DVD in 2006. Now our friends at The Digital Bits have managed to circumvent a tight-lipped studio and get some additional information in their
Rumor Mill post yesterday:
Well... we've confirmed with multiple sources now, each in places to know, that work is definitely underway at Paramount for a 2006 DVD release of Star Trek: The Complete Animated Series. And we have a little bit of additional information today as well. In our last post, we'd said to expect the title early in 2006. We're now hearing that mid-to-late 2006 is the more likely timeframe. One source told us not to expect the title on the studio's release schedule before June, and a couple of others have let us know that September or October is tentatively planned. Upon doing some research, September would make sense. It was back on September 8th of 1966 that the original Star Trek series first debuted on NBC TV here in the States. That would make September 2006 the franchise's official 40th Anniversary. Heck... they canned Enterprise, there are no new movies on the way yet (although there are some new rumors - click here and here). Paramount's gotta do SOMETHING for the 40th Anniversary, right? Makes sense to me.
[Editor's Note: Several readers have e-mailed to remind us that The Animated Series also made its TV debut on September 8th, back in 1973.]
Keep those hailing frequencies open, 'cause you know we'll keep you up to date on this in the weeks and months ahead...
Wow! My thanks to Bill Hunt of TheDigitalBits.com for taking the time to write to me and let me know he had posted that. He's going to keep working that from his end, and we'll keep working it from our end here at TVShowsOnDVD. We'll have more news for you as developments occur...stay tuned!
