One of our longest-running readers, and someone who often takes the time to write in to me with his well-thought-out comments, questions, and feedback about the world of TV-DVDs, is a smart young man names James Smith III. Just a week or so ago, recalling
our last news post in February about the show's DVD rumors, James asked me about what he referred to as the "strong possibilities with...Star Trek Animated" coming to DVD next year. My response to him was rather frank and more than just a little bit pessimistic, reflecting my gloomy premonitions (now apparently incorrect, thankfully):
I hope we haven't said anything at the site recently that makes anyone think that Star Trek Animated is anything resembling a sure bet for 2006. I've had zero word since that February 2005 story. If it was still on the radar, I would think I would hear something in 9 months! I'm having my doubts.
Yep, that was me saying all of that to James, one of our readers, just after the beginning of this month. So imagine my surprise a week later when I see a new folder had just popped up on Paramount's press site! You see, Paramount's press site consists of folders for every property they may bring out onto home video. When there's no folder, there's no release. When there is a folder, then a release is on the way or already here. Now there's a new folder on that password-protected press site, and it is labeled
ST: Animated Series. I can't think of anything else under Paramount's umbrella that "ST" would stand for, can you?
The folder in question is currently empty, which means that there's no artwork, no specs, no description, and no release date. It's a cinch this is probably coming in 2006, but beyond that reasonable expectation we have nothing more to tell you right now. Paramount was unable to comment on this and other titles when we attempted to reach them late this afternoon, but pledged to look into them for us early next week. So stay tuned, and we'll let you know what we find out!
