A couple of weeks ago we
broke the news - or rumors, really - that a
Sports Night - The 10th Anniversary Edition DVD set was on the way for release, sometime in September. We didn't have a solid studio name to bring you at the time, but we guessed that the folks at Shout! Factory might have something to do with it (based on their recent excellent re-release of
My So-Called Life).
Today trade periodical
Home Media Magazine has an
article posted which confirms that Shout! is indeed behind this release, and pins a specific street date on this 8-disc set as being
September 30th.
For $69.99 SRP you'll get all 45 episodes of the Emmy-winning show created by Aaron Sorkin (
West Wing), plus extras that include commentary tracks on the pilot and the series finale by Sorkin and Co-Exec Producer Thomas Schlamme. Shout! is still finalizing the supplements on this set, but plans right now call for 2 bonus discs filled (hopefully) with anew retrospective featurette with the cast and crew, a featurette comparing the fictional
Sports Night with real-life similar shows (like ESPN's
SportsCenter), a gag reel, deleted scenes, and a collectible 10th Anniversary booklet. Please read John Latchem's story at
Home Media Magazine via the link above, and get your best sense for where each of these plans are at, and understand why they are very much on the "wish list" right now and could still be subject to change.
This is an awesome show, with the original bare-bones DVD set out of print and very difficult to find. Stars such as Felicity Huffman (
Desperate Housewives), Peter Krause (
Dirty Sexy Money, Six Feet Under), Josh Charles (
Six Degrees, In Treatment), Robert Guillaume (
Soap, Benson), Sabrina Lloyd (Sliders) and Joshua Malina (The West Wing) all shine brightly. This was the first time Sorkin and Schlamme teamed up; their other two were
West Wing and
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (interesting trivia: all three shows finished their first season with an episode titled "What Kind of Day Has It Been?"). It sounds like Shout! has terrific plans, and fans (including Gord and I) simply cannot wait to see how it turns out! Stay tuned for updates...
