There has been some information going around the 'net about a "new"
Spectacular Spider-Man DVD coming out on May 5th, and it's causing some confusion among fans, so we want to take a moment and address it. Before Sony
officially announced last September's release of
The Spectacular Spider-Man - Attack Of The Lizard, the original wording we had seen here and there for the subtitle was "Volume 1: Attach of the Lizard." Then, when we first
heard about the next two releases, the titles we were given had been "Volume 2: Rise of the Super-Villains!" and "Volume 3: The Goblin Strikes!"
However, when the first release came out last September, there was no "volume" number as part of the subtitle; it was simply labeled
Attack of the Lizard on the box art, including the spine. The opposite was true last month when the next two releases hit on March 17th: the official box titles were simply
Volume 2 and
Volume 3, with no other wording to the on-package subtitles! And the
upcoming release on April 28th to finish the first season on DVD will be similarly titled
The Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume 4, with no other wording used.
So according to our information, on May 5th Sony is apparently re-releasing "Attack of the Lizard" with the re-worded packaging of
The Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume 1, in order to bring the titling in line and consistent with the 2nd through 4th volumes. All on-disc contents will be the same: a 69 (or 70, depending who you ask) minute single disc with programming taken from the first three episodes: "Survival of the Fittest," "Interactions" and "Natural Selection." Cost is the same at $19.94 SRP. There's no need to upgrade if you already have the original release (in fact, you may want to hold on to what could possibly become a collectible item!).
We're still waiting word on the next release after that, which is reportedly to be
The Spectacular Spider-Man - The Complete 1st Season. That will collect all four of the above-mentioned single disc releases into one package, perhaps with new bonus material. That last part is just a guess from us, though, and nothing is certain. IF we were to continue guessing, our next one would be to expect that season set to be somehow tied in to a certain event that happens every year in late July. Namely, the San Diego Comic Con. Is that when we'll get it? Stay tuned, and we'll let you know!
