A lot of fans had written in to tell us the our good friends at The Digital Bits had posted
a Rumor Mill story on November 17th (a week ago today), concerning a few Fox TV-on-DVD releases. One of the items mentioned was
Space: Above and Beyond. Here's what The Bits had to say:
11/17/04
Some quick 20th Century Fox news for you today. The studio has tentatively set Chris Carter's The Lone Gunmen: The Complete Series for release early in 2005. Also on the way for 2005 is Space Above and Beyond: The Complete Series (although the specific release timeframe has yet to be decided).
As longtime readers know, these are a pair of titles that we've been long interested in here at TVShowsOnDVD. In
a July news story here at TSoD, I described how I had asked Fox exec Peter Staddon about these titles in a January '04 online chat at the Home Theater Forum, and how in July we followed up on both of them. Staddon told us that "there are no plans right now" for
Space: Above and Beyond, and that's what we passed on at the time.
Gord asked again about this title with a Fox exec at the annual TV-DVD conference this past October, and once more there were no plans to reveal. A recent call to Fox to double-check on this rumor echoed the same response the exec gave us at the conference, and back in July.
Now perhaps the guys at The Digital Bits have an insight into this release which we're not aware of, and which Fox isn't willing to publicly discuss at this time. That's entirely possible, and we sure hope that the rumor is true. But frankly we're not as optimistic as the folks are at The Bits, and if the release does come out it certainly wouldn't be for quite some time...many months at the minimum.
Rest assured, though, that if this series comes to DVD, the high number of voters for this show at TVShowsOnDVD (it's a Top-20 unreleased series in our voting!) will have to get in line behind Gord and I to purchase this set. Stay tuned, and if we have something solid to report, we'll be all over it.
And our call to Fox isn't all bad news! Fans of the
Lone Gunmen series should look out for our separate news about it...we reveal the month that it will be released in a story posted today, as a Thanksgiving treat for our readers. Enjoy the holiday, and look for more news all weekend long.
