Yes, after 5 long years, we'll finally find our Johnson at last! Notch Johnson, that is...the head lifeguard at the beaches of the fictional California town of Malibu Adjacent. Johnson is played by Timothy Stack, who you've seen in TV Shows like
Parker Lewis Can't Lose and
Night Stand. Stack also created, wrote and executive produced
Beach, and these days he's a consulting producer on
My Name Is Earl. His hilariously outrageous material in this 2000-era FX Channel series is certainly worthy of the Howard Stern Production Company shingle, who made the program for Fox.
In April 2003, Fox Home Entertainment released
Son of the Beach - Volume 1 on DVD, containing all of Season 1 (13 episodes) and the first half of Season 2 (8 episodes), for a total of 21 episodes on 3 discs. Fans clamored for the remainder of the show's three-season run to hit DVD, but Fox decided this wasn't a Notch they wanted on their belt.
Five years later, and one of the hot discussions at TVGuide.com (the owners of TVShowsOnDVD) is
about "stalled" series, and how there's still hope that they may come to DVD after all. The folks at Shout! Factory quickly told us that one such item, Universal's
Adam-12, would
be continuing from Shout! on DVD later this year, in September.
Now Shout! has told us to expect
Son of the Beach - Volume 2 from them, at long last, on
Tuesday, November 11, 2008. It will contain the rest of Season 2 (7 episodes) and all of Season 3 (14 episodes), for once more a total of 21 episodes in a 3-DVD set.
Among the many guest stars you'll see appearing in those episodes are Patricia "Patti" Hearst, Joey Buttafuoco, Maureen McCormick, William Schallert, David Graf, Cindy Williams, Alan Thicke, Vincent Pastore, Robert Pine, Jason Alexander, Adam Carolla, Richard Hatch, Bill Maher, Mark L. Walberg, David Arquette, C. Thomas Howell, William Katt, Jimmie Walker, Morgan Brittany, RuPaul, Michael Ensign, Frank Sinatra Jr., Gilbert Gottfried, Fabio, George Takei, Gary Coleman, Mark Hamill, Lee Majors, Ian Ziering, Anson Williams and many others.
That's in addition to a great (and great-looking) cast that join Stack in every episode as Shore Patrol Force #30 ("SPF-30"), and will dare anything for a laugh: Kim Oja ("Kimberlee Clark"), Leila Arcieri ("Jamaica St. Croix"), Jaime Bergman ("B.J. Cummings"), Roland Kickinger ("Chip Rommel") and Lisa Banes ("Mayor Anita Massengil"). As they say in the show, Johnson's unit may not be the biggest, but it's definitely the best...and the funniest! Stay tuned for further details about this long-awaited release, as Shout! Factory finalizes things and gets the information to us.
