The Smurfs - Package Art, Front & Rear, Gives Us the Correct Title, Details and Extras

Single-disc release in February will actually be a 'best-of' title

Last week we let you know that Warner Home Video was preparing a new single-disc release of The Smurfs on DVD. This 5-episode collection, costing $14.98 SRP, is due to arrive on February 17th. But we've learned a few new things about this title. Beginning with the title!

In our previous report, we said that some of the studio material had described this release as being "The Smurfs - Season 2, Volume 1," and since all of the named episodes were from the second season, we didn't really give it a second thought. But several of our readers pointed out that they named episodes were not together in the beginning of the season's broadcast order, but were instead scattered from throughout that year's offerings. Now the studio has provided the package art, front and back, for this disc. And it makes it clear that this is an "assortment" of cartoons, running "more than 90 minutes" (the actual running time given is 103 minutes), in what can only be described as a "best-of" release.

So the accurate title, as you can see below, is The Smurfs - Volume 1: True Blue Friends. And, in contrast to the early information, the rear box art shows that there WILL be a bit of bonus material after all. This extras is called "Meet the Smurfs," and is described this way: "Enter a Smurf village chock full of character profiles, trivia and other treats." It also shows that there will be French subtitles on board, in addition to the English subtitles that we already knew about. Here's a look at that artwork, front and back, plus a peek at the disc label art as well:
