Get Smart - Clearing up Confusion About a Retail Release of The Complete Series

Online listing indicates that it's for the 1965 series...is it?

We've gotten a number of e-mails lately from readers, who notice that a site called "VideoETA" has a listing for a June 3rd release for Get Smart - The Complete Series. This listing shows the release will star Don Adams, Barbara Feldon and Edward Platt, so naturally everyone is sure this must be for the retail store "general" release of the original 1965 series. It's the only Get Smart television show (or film, for that matter) to include the late Edward Platt as "The Chief", as his death occurred in 1974 (prior to the first attempt to bring Get Smart back, in the film The Nude Bomb).

The award-winning DVD release of the classic series has been available since November 2006, but only directly from Time Life. As a 5-season, 25-disc release chock-full of extras and boxed in a collectible "entrance to CONTROL Headquarters" package, it's no wonder the release goes for $199.96 (and worth every penny!). When (and if ) a general retail release comes of that set, it's expected to come from HBO Video (their logo is on the bottom of the box) and distributed by Warner Home Video.

So this listing at VideoETA for Get Smart - The Complete Series shows a $19.95 SRP cost, coming from Sony Pictures, and we've been told by our good friend Carl Birkmeyer of the Get Smart fansite WouldYouBelieve.com that he's been getting lots of e-mails questioning this as well.

The official word is that this is NOT the original 1965 series that included Edward Platt as "The Chief". Instead, this upcoming Sony release is the 1995 remake series that aired on the Fox Network, where Max (a still bumbling Don Adams) has become the chief, his wife 99 (Barbara Feldon) is a member of Congress, and Andy Dick (NewsRadio) is the bumbling agent that goes on missions with a much-more-competent female, Agent 66 (Elaine Hendrix, Joan of Arcadia). 7 episodes were produced.

The release has not officially been announced by Sony yet, and so there are no additional details we can provide you until they do. VideoETA's "Contact VideoETA" link at the bottom of their site's pages will demonstrate that they have a mailing address of "2 Ingram Blvd, La Vergne, TN"...that's also the address for Ingram Entertainment and Ingram's "creative marketing" group, which helps us to understand how (and, possibly, why) VideoETA has this info in advance of Sony's official announcement date. Stay tuned, though, and we'll bring you details just as soon as we can get our hands on them!

In the meantime, the original 1965 show's five seasons are still ONLY available directly from Time Life, and there is no indication yet on a general retail release. We'll let you know if that changes! For full details about that Time Life version, visit our listing for the package.
