It's been nearly a year since Time-Life started shipping the award-winning Get Smart
DVD set, and we've been getting an increasing amount of email asking us when the set will hit retail. Time-Life licensed the show from HBO in a deal that gave them a 1 year exclusive, which is set to expire this week. Contracts like this define the minimum exclusive period, not the exact date of the retail release, which is set by HBO in this case. While Time-Like has a minimum 1 year exclusive, there's nothing that says HBO must release the DVD set this month, or year; it's up to them to decide when it fits best in their schedule.
We've been asking about the retail release of Get Smart
, but there's still no word on when it'll be released to store, or how it'll be packaged. When (or if) the show is announced for retail, it could be released in season sets. Even with an aggressive 3-month break between releases it could be well over a year before all 5 seasons are out. We already know of HBO releases in February, so it's safe to say it won't be out before then, so we'd be well into 2009 before the final season is released (assuming they release the show in seasons and not the complete series).
There's a lot of editorial above, so here are the facts:
Hopefully that clears up what a 1 year exclusive means. Time-Life also has an exclusive on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. from Warner Bros
, which should start shipping early next week.
