Site News - Gord Lacey In The News!

Posted by David Lambert

You all know who Gord Lacey is, right? Creator, programmer, webmaster, and owner of TVShowsOnDVD.com (this humble website). I'm David, his "man Friday"; I help out around here (for instance, I do most of the news items).

Since Gord's away, then Dave will play. Well, not "play" exactly, just talk about Gord in a way he wouldn't allow if he were around to keep a lid on me. You see, Gord is kind of a modest guy, and doesn't always toot his own horn.

But loyal visitors of TVShowsOnDVD are probably very interested in knowing how this site is growing, and becoming a focal part of the ever-growing TV-on-DVD phenomenon. Gord and I are awed about what has become of the TV-DVD market, as we approach this site's 2nd anniversary at the start of next month.

So, as the headline says, Gord is in the news a lot lately. For starters, Gord was heavily quoted at the start of this week in an Enrique Rivero article picked up by Reuters/The Hollywood Reporter, and circulated worldwide. The subject is "Music Licenses Affect TV-To-DVD," and we've had responses on this from as far away as Berlin! It's a very good read, and says what it needs to without even mentioning the related current issue with Roswell.

Next: as you know from Gord's "Bye Bye" note, he's (very temporarily!) away attending the TV-DVD Conference, the first-ever gathering just on the subject of getting TV Shows put onto DVD. What's Gord doing there? He's on a panel full of some rather high muckity-muck types, taking the consumer point of view on getting out the classic series on DVD in releases that YOU want to buy. Here's the official agenda point for his discussion:
Executive Session II: Oldies But Goodies--Finding, Selling, Releasing and Marketing Treasures from the Vault

In this session panelists will address such topics and issues as why some beloved old shows sell on DVD and others don't, what works best from a packaging standpoint, are "complete season" sets always the best way to go, how to find out who owns what, releasing public domain shows that might already be in the market, and tapping into the most important barometer of what's hot and what's not, the consumer.

    Moderator: Don Rosenberg

Panelists: David Vasile, president, Anchor Bay Entertainment; Sam Toles, Rhino Home Video; Mark Rashba, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment; Peter Block, Lions Gate Entertainment; Gord Lacey, TV Shows on DVD Web site; Paul Brownstein - TV producer; Rosemary Markson - Warner Home Video
As I said, there are some illuminaries in that group. I expect that it will be a lively discussion, and a lively conference. Gord will let us know what happens when he gets back. If he gets some hot news at the show, he'll make sure that either he or I report it ASAP.

Finally, Gord is gonna step off the plane late on Saturday night from that Conference, go home, and get ready for a radio interview in the wee hours of the morning. You can tune in via weblink (RealPlayer or RealOne Player required) to Chicago's WGN Radio to hear the "Nick At Night" show, hosted by Nick Digilio. WGN Radio's Guests/Topics schedule shows that this will air on Saturday, October 25 and describes the (Central Time Zone) time slot as "1:05am (the first of two 1:05am's, that is)." That's because of the Daylight Savings Time change that night, folks (you know, "fall back"). The description of the show topic says:
Been wondering if that Kids In The Hall DVD set will ever be released? Gord Lacey, president of TVShowsOnDVD.com, knows what's available and what's on the release schedule.

Wow, an international news story, a major Hollywood confab, and a radio interview all in the same week! All the while running (and programming upgrades for) this site, and consulting on the Kids In The Hall DVD release at the same time. Gord's a machine, and I just wanted to spread the word about that a bit. He'll probably scold me for posting this, but I don't care. You guys should know, because you're the ones who win in the end.

THANKS, GORD!
