HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS AND TV PRODUCERS GET TOGETHER FOR FIRST-EVER TV DVD CONFERENCE
AUGUST 28, 2003 - The surging popularity of TV shows on DVD will be the focus of a one-day conference this fall in Hollywood. The first-ever TV DVD Conference, produced by Video Store Magazine in cooperation with the Digital Entertainment Group (formerly the DVD Entertainment Group), will be held Oct. 22 at the Wyndham Bel Age on Sunset Boulevard. Executive producer Thomas K. Arnold says he expects more than 300 DVD and television executives to attend the event, which will include three panel discussions and a product showcase luncheon with a special guest celebrity speaker, not yet announced.
"Television has provided DVD with a whole new channel of programming," Arnold says. "We're seeing huge sales for everything from boxed sets of popular current series like 'The Sopranos,' 'Friends' and 'The Simpsons' to vintage favorites like 'The Outer Limits' and 'Married...With Children.' And then there's the whole other issue of children's TV programming migrating to disc, such as 'The Rugrats' and 'Spongebob Squarepants.'"
"TV shows on DVD is truly a phenomenon," adds Video Store Magazine publisher Don Rosenberg. "Our market research shows TV programming on DVD last year accounted for 10 percent of total consumer spending on DVD, up from just 6 percent in 2001. And based on the heavy release schedules we're looking at, spending this year will cross the $1 billion market."
Panel discussions will examine marketing strategies for current TV series, how to find, license and release vintage TV shows on DVD, and the booming market for short-form children's television. Also on the agenda is a special research presentation on the TV DVD market from Judith McCourt, Video Store Magazine's market research director.
The event is open to the trade only. Advance registrations are $195 for Digital Entertainment Group members and $245 for nonmembers. Special press registrations are available to credentialed media by contacting Thomas K. Arnold at tkarnold@aol.com.
