About a year ago we brought you a couple of news stories about something a bit different then we tend to talk about here. Instead of talking about our usual type of TV-on-DVD releases, we filled you in on a couple of DVD-based games that fit into the "TV-DVD" genre by way of content. The games fell into one of two categories: they were either a trivia-based board game, such as
Scene It? - T.V. Edition, or else they were a DVD that is mimicking the gameplay of a TV Game Show, such as
Family Feud.
We had received some very positive feedback for letting our interested readers know about these items. So now, with the gift-giving season not too terribly far away, there are a slew of new items in this genre that we want to fill you in on. We're going to list them below, in no particular order, with illustrations and links to purchase (and the current price of) each item through Amazon.com. You can also find these in your various local stores (usually with the board games if a department store, or near the videogames if an Electronics store such as Best Buy), but if you order via the Amazon links we provide then TVShowsOnDVD.com gets a small affiliate fee which helps us to keep the site running. We always appreciate our readers' help on that!
Leading among the newest items are two new "refill packs" for the Scene It! series of DVD Board Games: one is only avialable as a refill pack, and that's the HBO edition. It's marked for mature audiences only, and covers trivia about such HBO original shows as
The Sopranos, Deadwood, Sex and the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, Entourage, The Wire, and more. The other Scene It! is The Warner TV 50th Anniversary edition, and it is available both as a refill pack and a full edition complete with its own board (Amazon is presently only selling the full set, although the refill pack version's box is included in the illustration below). Just in time to celebrate the 50 years of Warner Brothers' vast television library, you'll find trivia on here covering modern shows such as
Friends, The O.C. and
ER, recent classics such as
Dallas, Family Matters, Dukes of Hazzard and
Wonder Woman, and no doubt we will also see questions from the deeply historical shows of Warner's past, like
Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip and
F Troop. Want to try to play a demo of it right now?
You can by clicking here!
There is also a more "lightweight" game in the general Scene It! style, but without a board or dice or pieces, so it's more suitable for parties: it's Shout About, and it is easy to keep score on the DVD itself. Basically, as the title implies, you can just shout out the answer...much like the "party play" option on the Scene It! games, but more organized. Shout About TV - Volume 1 can be ordered from Amazon, and Volume 2 (also pictured below) is available in stores along with the first disc. These come in regular DVD "keepcases" like any single-disc film tends to come in, so they're small and easily transportable/storable, and might be good for the passengers on road trips if you have a portable player or car-based player (we're not suggesting for the driver to watch the screen, though!).
Then there's stuff just for the kids, including one based on the
Lilo & Stich TV series which also includes a couple of the full cartoons from the show. There's also a trivia game based on the E! cable network's programming; that may be kind of borderline to include in here, but we decided to toss it in and let you folks judge. And then, there's the cool game shows we've mentioned above:
Family Fued, Name That Tune, The Price Is Right...they speak for themselves. For the sake of completeness, we're inlcuding those few items that were out last year at this time, but which you may have missed. I know I want to find quite a few of these wrapped up for me under the Christmas tree, and we bet many of you want to get your hands on these, too!
