Site News - Changes in the New Year

With the new year fast aproaching we wanted to let you know of a few changes that will be implemented on the site.

The first addition will be a form which users can fill out to report changes to the original content of a show. More and more sets are being released with music replacements, cut episodes, or altered aspect ratios. The idea for this list came up in a recent discussion on the Home Theater Forum regarding the music changes to Quantum Leap. It won't be a place to air frustrations over the changes, just a way to log them for others to see. The changes will be tied to specific titles found in the "DVD Releases" list, as well as a new menu item called "Alterations List." A submission will be listed as "pending" until a few others verify that it's correct.

We're also going to change the lists of DVDs that are displayed when you log into the site; the DVDs people own and want. Those lists hardly change, so I'm sure many users ignore them when they log in. The new lists will include recently released titles that people own, or upcoming titles people want. This will ensure that the lists will constantly change.

We're also looking into the way the voting system is implemented. Right now users can vote for "season sets," individual volumes," and "best of releases." After looking over the voting habits of a cross-section of users we've noticed that people are likely to vote for one release type, or all three. The votes are stores in separate tables, so any queries to determine rank have to combine these tables in a complex query which slows the site down. We've looked into this and determined that it would be better if people could vote for one type of release and store all the data in a single table. Obviously this is a big change and will have to be tested before implementation, so we'll let you know before it goes into effect. The result should be better data for the studios, and a site that runs faster.

We may have another trick or two up our sleeves for 2005, so stay tuned.
