Two weeks ago we brought you
all the details about the Warner Archive MOD (manufacture-on-demand) release of the
Classic TV Christmas Collection 4-disc set, with 10 new-to-DVD episodes from ten different Warner-owned television shows. Warner has sent us an exclusive sneak-preview clip of the
Mama's Family episode on this set, "Mama Gets Goosed." You can find that below, along with a button link to order the title exclusively from the WBshop online store. Careful, the clip is fun, but it might also be considered a bit of a spoiler!
Folks have asked us why there are so many discs on this release for just ten episodes; usually that many episodes could fit on just two or three DVDs. Well, what accounts for the high number of discs is that the MOD DVDs used are single density/layer, rather than dual density/layer. So, in order to maintain maximum quality for each episode, Warner only puts 2-3 episodes (assuming "hour-long episodes) per disc, instead of the 4-5 like you would see otherwise. Warner tells me that they are looking for ways to store more episodes per disc without having to compress them and compromise their A/V quality.
In fact, this is mainly what's holding up Warner Archive releases of shows like
77 Sunset Strip! That was an hour-long show, with seasons that consisted of 34-40 episodes most seasons (except the sixth and final one, which only had 20). The WBshop doesn't want to sell an MOD title with 12-20 DVDs in the set just for one season...think of the cost for something like that! So they are waiting on that title, and other shows in the same boat, until they work out the dual-layer MOD issues. I'm told they're getting closer and closer to it, mind you. Stay tuned and we'll let you know about any further developments along those lines!
