This isn't the sort of thing we normally post about here at TVShowsOnDVD (mainly because it's not exactly about both TV Shows AND about DVD...though it comes close, in a manner of speaking). We're bending the rules a bit because we mainly think it will be fun for many of our readers!
The folks at trade magazine
Agent DVD (sister publication to
Home Media Magazine) have put up
a poll (when you get there, click on through the paragraph long-link to start taking the poll) called "The Greatest Franchise on DVD Ever!" It asks for feedback about the best possible franchises which have seen releases on DVD, in a number of different categories.
Most of the categories are film-related, but there's one category just for TV Shows. The poll is being done tournament-style, and right now they're at the "semi-finals" stage. The finals start on April 28th, so you should return to that web page by then to take the poll again for the final round. The TV Shows (all available on DVD) that are currently in the semifinals poll are
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ("+
Angel"),
Doctor Who ("+
Torchwood"),
M*A*S*H, The Muppets, The Simpsons, South Park, Star Trek (presumably including all versions),
Stargate (presumably including
SG-1, Atlantis and possibly
Infinity as well), and
The X-Files.
The poll starts out by asking you to indicate "What is the most important element in determining the greatest franchise?" Now think about that answer carefully, because if you say the best reason is "How it holds up over time," but then you pick the show which has been on the least amount of time, you're probably contradicting yourself a bit. So consider that while you vote!
In the end, it's all just a popularity contest, right? Well, let's see which one takes the "prize"...have fun!
