This morning Fox Home Entertainment informed retailers to expect
The Simpsons - The 13th Season on DVD and Blu-ray Disc this
August 24th. As you may recall, the first 12 seasons came out in DVD format only, then Fox skipped straight to
The Complete 20th Season in time to celebrate the twenty-year anniversary of the show...and also the fact that the show had begun to be broadcast in HD during that season. Hence that was the first title to be released in both standard DVD and high-def Blu-ray. Now, as Fox returns to the seasons they had skipped, they are keeping the duo-format release plan (which we know will raise some questions among fans...unfortunately we don't have any answers right now, beyond the information we're giving you today!).
The DVD release of
The Simpsons - The 13th Season will come on 4 discs, running 484 minutes. Video is full screen, and audio is in English 5.1 Dolby Surround, with options for Spanish Stereo and French Stereo. Subtitles are in English and Spanish. The only bonus material mentioned at this time are Audio Commentaries on all 22 episodes. Cost is $49.98 SRP, and package art (which, for a limited time, will have the front cover embossed) can be found below.
The Blu-ray Disc version has the same content and extras, but fitting onto 3 discs, and presented in high-def...but still in the full-screen 1.33:1 aspect ratio (as originally broadcast). Audio formats are upped to English 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio, with options for Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and French 5.1 Dolby Digital. English and Spanish subtitles are included on this, too. Cost is $59.99 SRP. At the bottom you'll see the BD box art, featuring little Ralphie Wiggum.
Guest voices for this season include the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Matthew Perry, Jane Kaczmarek, Jess Harnell, music group R.E.M., George Takei, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Paul Newman, Richard Gere, Ben Stiller, Jon Lovitz, Reese Witherspoon, Wolfgang Puck, Dennis Weaver, Frank Welker, Olympia Dukakis, Russ Leatherman ("Mr. Moviefone"), music group Phish, Stan Lee, James Lipton, Robert Pinsky, Carmen Electra, Frances Sternhagen and Joe Mantegna as "Fat Tony."
