We alerted you
early this month that The Simpsons - The Complete 20th Season
was available as a pre-announcement pre-order at Amazon.com, in both DVD format
and - for the first time ever for The Simpsons
- on high-definition Blu-ray Disc
. Why no Blu-ray for any of the previous seasons? Because the 20th season (broadcast 2008-2009) was the first to be broadcast on Fox Network in HD format.
It's also why Fox is skipped - just for now, we'll get them later on! - the 13th through 19th seasons on home video: they want to give Blu-ray owners a chance to enjoy The Simpsons
in high-def, and for that they have to go with the first season with episodes designed for HDTV enjoyment. We expect them to probably go back to previous seasons later on for BD release, but as of right now it's important to know that there's no announcements from Fox for any Simpsons
Blu-rays prior to The Complete 20th Season
The Amazon listings have had pricing ($49.98 SRP for the DVD and $59.99 SRP for the Blu-ray) and package art (that we've previously posted
, but is shown again at bottom). But they haven't had a release date, though, because Fox Home Video hadn't officially announced the title on either format, until now. Retailers have been informed to expect The Simpsons - The Complete 20th Season
on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on January 12th
The DVD release will come on 4 discs, with episodes presented in anamorphic widescreen video. Audio options include English 5.1 Dolby Surround, French 2.0 Stereo and Spanish 2.0 Stereo. There are also subtitles in English and Spanish.
The Blu-ray Disc version comes on 2 discs, with episodes shown in high-def 1080p widescreen video. Audio choices are in English 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.0 Dolby Digital. English and Spanish subtitles are found here as well.
Both releases bring you 21 episodes running 482 minutes long, and include guest voices such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Denis Leary, Brian Grazer, Joe Montana, Marv Albert, Mark Cuban, Jeff Bezos, Ed Begley Jr., Colm Meaney, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Page, Jodie Foster and an always-fun visit from Kelsey Grammer as "Sideshow Bob."
In the past, season set DVD releases of The Simpsons
are always chock-full of bonus material, including commentaries and featurettes and other items, including hidden gems. However, this time the only extra supplement that Fox is mentioning - at least so far - is the Featurette "The 20th Anniversary Special Sneak Peek by Morgan Spurlock." It will appear on disc 4 of the DVD release, and Disc 1 of the Blu-ray edition. If we find out about any further extras, or any additional info about these releases at all, then we'll certainly let you know.
