Arrives On DVD For the First Time On September 23
HOLLYWOOD, June 17, 2003 - The three-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning mini-series from 1980, James Clavell's SHOGUN, arrives on DVD on September 23, from Paramount Home Entertainment. Nominated for no less than 14 Emmy Awards and scoring three wins for Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Costume Design for A Series and Outstanding Graphic Design and Title Sequences, SHOGUN also received three Golden Globe Awards for Best TV Series-Drama, Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series-Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series-Drama. The story of an English ship pilot who is forced to deal with the two most powerful men in Japan when he is found shipwrecked upon their coast in the early 17th century, SHOGUN follows the final stages of the showdown between these two Japanese leaders as they fight for the title of Shogun, which will give ultimate power to the one who possesses it.
The fifth disc of this 5-disc DVD collection of SHOGUN includes:
- A 79-minute documentary on "The Making of Shogun," which includes many highlights such as the Earthquake, the Blockade, the Escape from Osaka Castle;
- Three historical perspective featurettes on aspects of Japanese culture at the time: the Samurai, the Tea Ceremony and the Geisha
- A commentary by director Jerry London on seven select scenes, such as Blackthorne's arrival at the castle and the blasting of the fishing boats.
Based on James Clavell's best-selling epic, SHOGUN stars Richard Chamberlain (The Three Musketeers) as Pilot-Major John Blackthorne, an English navigator who becomes both a player and a pawn in the political games of feudal Japan. When Blackthorne's vessel is found shipwrecked upon the Japanese coast, he quickly assimilates into Japanese culture, becoming allies with one of the most powerful men in Japan, Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune), wearing the robes of a samurai and taking a lover in the beautiful interpreter, Lady Mariko (Yoko Shimada). But as his forbidden romance blossoms, Blackthrone finds himself caught between the political struggles of Toranaga and his competitor, Ishido (Nabuo Kaneko), as the two battle it out for the title of Shogun.
The DVD of SHOGUN is presented in full screen format and the audio tracks feature Dolby Digital English 5.1 and English Restored Mono. The DVD is closed-captioned and sub-titled in English for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The DVD of SHOGUN is priced to own at $89.99 (S.R.P.) in the U.S. and C$104.99 (S.R.P.) in Canada. SHOGUN is rated Not Rated by the Motion Picture Association of America and is rated 14A in Canada. It has a running time of approximately 547 minutes and is encoded with the Macrovision Anti-Copy process.
