When BCI Eclipse first
talked about their He-Man acquisition a year ago, they proudly touted the fact that they would be bringing product to market very quickly, in time for the July 2005 San Diego Comic-Con convention. That product turned out to be the
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Best 10 Episode Collector's Edition. This year, BCI has
announced the acquisition of a large amount of other Filmation-produced properties, and
She-Ra: Princess of Power is the most prominently-mentioned title among those. So, how soon will we see a DVD of it?
The answer can be found in
yesterday's story posted at the
Home Media Retailing website. The trade magazine's Brendan Howard talks with BCI Director of Acquisitions Jeff Hayne about the various properties they've acquired, and about how people today will want to revisit these titles and share them with their children (Jeff must be spying on my family, because that describes exactly the situation in my house!). The article concludes with these comments:
"She-Ra: Princess of Power" will be the first show released in the deal. BCI hopes to trot out product in time for the San Diego Comic-Con in July, just as they did with "He-Man" last July.
Hayne already has been contacting talent and others for extras.
Excellent. Now, what would that July release be? In our own talks with Jeff and the other folks at BCI, they've indicated that
She-Ra: Princess of Power - The Secret of the Sword would of course be the first release of the series, as it stands alone and would be the perfect single-disc (re-)introduction to the show as it contains the origin of our heroine, and the background about how she came to rebel against Hordak and his evil henchmen.
For our part, we've passed on to BCI the feedback we've heard from many of you that there is interest in such a release containing both the original theatrical cut and the "episodes" cuts of the feature, as it was shown in five parts as the kick-off of the series broadcasts. The TV cut in its five parts contained extra footage, as many of you know. BCI is exploring the idea, and I guess we'll wait for the official announcement of the
She-Ra DVDs to find out if they are able to pull it off. Stay tuned, and we'll give you updates and developments as they occur!
