Recently we've been looking to squeeze in some time on our busy news schedule to post this info, so we apologize for taking almost a week to get to it. But one of our readers, "Bob," sent us this interesting note at the beginning of this past week:
Sgt Preston Of The Yukon-Season One, was released in Nov.'05 by Critic's Choice in an exclusive edition authorized by the owners of Preston, Classic Media, Inc. Classic Media, also owns The Lone Ranger and Lassie. The 33 First Season episodes are in color and uncut. Excellent prints were used. Although, the complete series,78 episodes, was produced in color it was originally broadcast in black and white over three seasons,1955-58. I purchased Preston from deepdiscountdvd. The 33 episodes are boxed with five DVDs in slimcases. The box states seasons two and three will be out "in the near future."
We checked this out, and found out that Bob's right in that this seems to be an exclusive to DeepDiscountDVD.com; even "sister" e-tailers CCVideo.com and DVDPlanet.com (the latter is one of TVShowsOnDVD's affiliated retailers) do not carry
Sergeant Preston of the Yukon - The Complete 1st Season...but
DeepDiscountDVD.com does. They sell the 14-hour, 5-DVD set for $35.98 (indicating that the SRP would be $59.95 if it was available elsewhere). Below you'll see the cover art, description, and episode list from the e-tailer's entry.
Before we show you that, though, we'll remind you who Classic Media is. Not only are they the folks who own
Lassie and
The Lone Ranger, as Bob mentions, but they are also the group behind the production of the DVDs for
Underdog, Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Casper, Roger Ramjet and
Mr. Magoo. So this isn't a fly-by-night operation, and we're sure that Bob's on the mark with his comments about how good the release is. So if you're a fan of this Mounty who is a relentless pursuer of lawbreakers, and his swift and strong dog Yukon King, then you'll be all over this release. Especially since the description does indeed promise the remaining two seasons as well:
Richard Simmons stars as Sgt. Preston of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who along with his horse "Rex" and faithful Canadian husky dog "Yukon King," enforced law and order in Alaska during the turbulent turn-of-the century gold rush. This beloved TV series was based on the popluar radio series created by George W. Trendle, who also created "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet." This complete 1st season collection includes all 33 color episodes of 5 DVDs. Look for the 55 episodes from the remaining 2nd and 3rd seasons to be released in the near future.
