Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that Seinfeld - Season 1: The Very Beginning
will be released as a separate DVD on September 16th
. As many of you know, the "first season" consisted of just 5 episodes: "The Seinfeld Chronicles" (the original name of the series, and originally shown as a stand-alone item in July, 1989), "The Stakeout," "The Robbery," "Male Unbonding" and "The Stock Tip" (these four originally aired in May/June 1990; the series began in earnest with the second season debut in January 1991).
Most die-hard fans already own these episodes as part of either the Seinfeld - Vol 1: Seasons 1 & 2
box set (a 4-disc collection with all 18 episodes from the first two seasons) or else the Seinfeld - The Complete Series
big package set. However, Sony must feel that there are more casual fans yet to be reached with these more expensive sets, so they are putting out the first 5 episodes on a single disc that will cost only $14.94 SRP. In addition, they will entice those casual fans to upgrade to the bigger packages by including a $5 mail-in rebate for purchasing one of the full season sets.
Video is full frame, audio is English - Dolby Digital Stereo with French and Spanish tracks as well, subtitles include English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, and the release will be closed captioned for the hearing impaired. Running time is 115 minutes. Plus you'll get extras such as Audio Commentaries ("Yada Yada Yada"), In the Vault: Deleted Scenes, Inside Looks, Episode Introduction and "Notes About Nothing." Here's the package art (may still be subject to change):
