SeaQuest DSV - Universal Confirms 1st Season Release Date Is On a Monday! Plus, More Details/Specs

Posted by David Lambert
Last week we broke the news about the long-awaited DVD release of SeaQuest DSV - Season 1. Other than the box art (seen again below) and the inclusion of "exclusive never-before-seen footage," the only real info we had was a release date of December 26, 2005...a Monday. As we mentioned in our previous story, that's highly unusual, since DVDs released to retail stores are almost always on a Tuesday, and on very rare occasions have streeted on a Friday. Now, for the first time, we've got a TV-DVD retail release showing up on a day other than a Tuesday, and it's going to be a Monday!

Universal Studios Home Video has confirmed that 12/26/05 is indeed the release date for this season set, along with a not-well-known film DVD and also marked-down prices on two dozen older film DVDs such as Galaxy Quest. The studio offered no comment as to their specific reasons for the special Monday street date, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that there is an enormous amount of foot traffic in stores the day after Christmas: returns and exchanges, post-holiday bargains, and die-hard shoppers anxious to get back into stores after being denied due to store closings on the holiday itself (hey, I used to be a retail store manager for over 10 years, and I know those kind of shop-a-holics). So it makes sense to put this title in front of all those potential customers by moving up the release date by 24 hours, and bucking tradition in the process.

Universal's official announcement also lets us know that this is a 4 DVD set in slim "thinpak" cases in an outer slipcover, and that those discs are double-sided (we know that disappoints a number of you, who have more trouble than other consumers might with double-sided DVDs in your players). The SRP is $59.98, for 1098 minutes running time. Video is full-frame, and audio is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. Subtitles are present in English and Spanish. No new word is available yet about the supplements, so the extended footage is still all we know. Stay tuned and we'll update you further when we can.
