If you've gone to the supermarket lately, and gone anywhere near the breakfast cereal or cookie aisles, you can't help but notice products from Kellogg's and Keebler that feature promo markings for a "
Scooby-Doo Toon Tour of Mysteries" set of DVD-ROM discs.
The promotion, first
announced last February, started circulating product in June. In July, as the back-to-school season kicked into high gear, the product started ramping up, and it's hard not to notice displays of cookies and cereals in many chain grocery stores. I've collected discs 1, 3, 4, and 5 so far:
The DVD-ROMs are full of places to go like The Fun House (printable activities, etc.), the Midway Arcade (online web-based games & demos), the Web Museum (links to various websites), the Fortune Teller (a link to a website featuring "Ern (as in
Eet and Ern) The Magnificent" and his "mystical powers"), and the Souvenir Shoppe (links to downloads of desktop wallpaper, etc.). These items don't work unless you've loaded the disc into a computer that runs Windows (anything from Windows '98 onward to the most recent XP version) or Macintosh OS 9.1 or better. For a complete rundown of the requirements,
click here. There's also a trial subscription to AOL located on this disc.
Don't have a computer? Don't fret! As far as I'm concerned, that's the LAST reason to collect these discs! The cool thing about them is that you can put them into any standard DVD player (computer drives work, of course, as do game systems like the PlayStation 2), and watch various episodes from The Cartoon Network!
There are three episodes per disc, and one of them is the featured "Solve the Scooby Mystery" cartoon, where Velma asks a trivia question at the end about the episode just seen. Those also have an opening sequence made just to introduce the story, featuring the entire Mystery Inc. gang driving along in the Mystery Machine on the way to the episode involved. Mind you, the
Scooby gang doesn't appear in those shows...with one major exception!
When
Johnny Bravo was just starting out, in July 1997, it was decided to bring Johnny into the world of Scoob and the gang by way of a cross-over episode called "Bravo Dooby-Doo." It's a must-see for any fan of
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, as it pulls Bravo into a classic Scooby mystery that reminds you of that original era in the history of the incredible snacking Great Dane. It pokes fun at itself, too, with a parody of the "Velma loses her glasses" gag, plus great lines like Bravo asking "Jinkies...isn't that a breakfast cereal or something?"
And that's just an example of the fun in store for
Scooby-Doo fans in this must-have Johnny Bravo episode! If that's not enough to pull you in, how about the voice cast reunion of such greats as Heather North ("Daphne" since 1970), B.J. Ward ("Velma" since 1985), Casey Kasem (original "Shaggy") and Frank Welker (original "Freddie," as well as a surprise Hanna Barbara 'toon character at the end). Too cool!
Here's the disc-by-disc breakdown of the four DVDs I've managed to collect so far:
- Disc 1:
- Johnny Bravo: "Bravo Dooby-Doo" (Solve the Scooby Mystery feature)
- The Powerpuff Girls: "Film Flam"
- Dexter's Laboratory: "Trick or Treehouse"
- Disc 2:
- List not available, but The Powerpuff Girls are shown on the disc art
- Disc 3:
- Dexter's Laboratory: "Unfortunate Cookie" (Solve the Scooby Mystery feature)
- Courage the Cowardly Dog: "The Mask"
- Johnny Bravo: "Noir Johnny"
- Disc 4:
- Ed, Edd N Eddy: "If It Smells Like An Ed..." (Solve the Scooby Mystery feature)
- Codename: Kids Next Door: "Operation: P.O.I.N.T."
- Dexter's Laboratory: "Photo Finish"
- Disc 5:
- Codename: Kids Next Door: "Operation: I.-S.C.R.E.A.M." (Solve the Scooby Mystery feature)
- Courage the Cowardly Dog: "The Tower of Dr. Zalost"
- The Powerpuff Girls: "Cat Man Do"
In addition, there's bonus content on each of these. However, all of these have the exact same extras: A Cartoon Network music video, a Cartoon Network bloober video, and an
Eet and Ern Mystery Riddle. Plus ads for Keebler, Cartoon Network, and X-Box (but the ads aren't forced; you choose if you want to see them or not).
The good news is that you can get these "immediately" inside specially-marked boxes of Pop-Tarts (Cherry, Blueberry, or Strawberry), and certain cereals such as Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, and of course Scooby's own cereal. For a complete list of these,
click here. The bad news? You can't tell from the outside of the box which disc is inside...you just have to keep buying products until you get them all!
Don't want to mess with that? You don't have to! Click
here to find out which products you can buy, collect 4 proofs-of-purchase from, and just mail off to get all 5 discs! Here's a pic of a package I bought with this offer, so you know what to look for:
