Sarah Jane Smith's life back on Earth is often just as mysterious, exciting and dangerous as exploring time and space in the TARDIS. Together with her new young friends, Maria and Clyde, and her newly adopted, genetically engineered son Luke, Sarah Jane comes face to face with a whole host of evil alien monsters with unearthly plans for the human race.
After traveling as a Companion with the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) over four seasons - and 18 adventures - of the classic Doctor Who
series, Elisabeth Sladen returned to the role of Sarah Jane Smith in the "modern era" with the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) in the 2006 episode "School Reunion." It soon led to her own show, the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures
, which has been very successful in the U.K. on CBBC and BBC1, and airs on the Sci Fi Channel in the U.S.A. (and on BBC Kids in Canada).
It's not the first time they tried to spin-off Sladen's Sarah Jane, by the way. A previous attempt from 1981, "K9 and Company: A Girl's Best Friend
," is coming to DVD
on September 2nd. But when that was announced, fans wanted to know when they could get the new Adventures
on DVD here on these shores.
Good news, then! Overnight, Warner Home Video and the BBC announced that The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete 1st Season
will come to North America about a month later, with the October 7th
DVD release of all six adventures from the first year of the show. Each adventure consists of 2 separate half-hour episodes, except for the first (pilot) story, which was produced as a single hour-long adventure and originally aired in England as a Holiday Special. On this release, you'll get:
- Invasion of the Bane (hour-long pilot/holiday special)
On her first night in her new house, 13-year-old Maria Jackson is woken by a bright light. Sneaking outside, she can't believe her eyes - her eccentric neighbor Sarah Jane is face to face with what can only be an alien! The next day, Maria is invited on a trip to a soft-drinks factory. But there's more to fizzy Bubble Shock than meets the eye - so it's lucky for Maria that Sarah Jane is close at hand. Sarah Jane is fascinated by Bubble Shock, a strangely addictive organic drink with sinister side-effects that is taking the world by storm. Can she and her new young friends stop Mrs Wormwood and her evil plans to enslave the human race?
- Revenge of the Slitheen (Part 1 and Part 2)
It's Maria, Luke and Clyde's first day at their new school - and something's not quite right. The food keeps going off, there's a funny smell in the air and the new technology block is hiding some dark secrets. The friends soon make a shocking discovery: evil alien race the Slitheen have disguised themselves as teachers as part of a deadly plan that threatens the future of the entire Earth.
- Eye of the Gorgon (Part 1 and Part 2)
Sarah Jane and her young friends investigate reports of a ghostly nun which is haunting the local old folks' residential home. And when one of the elderly residents entrusts Luke with a mysterious alien talisman, it becomes clear there is even more to the story than meets the eye. The gang delves deeper, and discovers that the nun is part of a secret order sworn to protect a terrifying alien creature who can turn her victims to stone with a single look.
- Warriors of Kudlak (Part 1 and Part 2)
Sarah Jane and Maria investigate the mysterious disappearance of local boy Lance Metcalf, and soon discover that a number of children have gone missing across the country. Remarkably, the disappearances all occurred during freak storms and in cities that are home to a laser tag game called Combat 3000. As Sarah Jane and Maria delve deeper into the mystery, Luke and Clyde are off enjoying a game of Combat 3000...
- Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? (Part 1 and Part 2)
Sarah Jane mysteriously disappears just as a huge meteor threatens to crash straight into Earth. When Maria wakes up one morning, it's as though Sarah Jane and Luke never existed. Living across the road in Sarah Jane's house is a woman called Andrea. And with the attic empty and Mr Smith nowhere to be seen, every other trace of Sarah Jane has vanished and Maria is the only one able to remember her. With the mysterious, hooded figure of the Trickster haunting Bannerman Road and the alien Graske meddling in time, Maria sets out to discover whatever happened to Sarah Jane. But as her journey takes her back to 1964, will she be able to find Sarah Jane in time to stop the meteor from destroying the world?
- The Lost Boy (Part 1 and Part 2)
A news report on a couple looking for their missing son, Ashley, brings a surprise for Sarah Jane when she discovers that the missing boy looks exactly like Luke. And when Mr Smith confirms that Luke is a genetic match with Ashley, Sarah Jane sends him back to live with his 'parents'. With no knowledge of his former life, Luke finds it hard to fit in and, when he tries to escape, he makes a startling discovery about who his parents really are. Sarah Jane, meanwhile, makes some investigations into the Pharos Para-Science Institute, a research unit that has been conducting experiments using alien technology.
Look for K9 to show up a bit (voiced by John Leeson), and sharp-eyed folks will recognize Samantha Bond ("Miss Moneypenny" in the Pierce Brosnan-era 007
films). Also guesting in the season's final adventure is Dr. Floella Benjamin, a presenter of '60s/'70s British children's shows as Play School
and Play Away
, and more recently the Chancellor of the University of Exeter.
In addition to the above, this 4-disc set will contain extras that include Interviews and a Photo Gallery. Video is anamorphic widescreen, and audio is listed right now simply as "English - Stereo" (we bet that will turn out to be 5.1). English subtitles are included. Running time is 360 minutes, and the cost is $49.98 SRP. Here is the package art:
