According to Amazon, Genius Entertainment is bringing Filmation's Sabrina the Teenage Witch - The Complete Animated Series to DVD shortly! The e-tailer's listing isn't set up to take pre-orders just yet (hopefully soon), but at least it does provide a release date of April 29th! Although other details aren't listed there yet, our understanding is that this will be 31 half-hour episodes costing $29.95 SRP. That episode count is consistent with the info at Entertainment Rights' website (ER owns and controls the majority of Filmation's library).
We had already mentioned (in an Archie's Fun House story about a month ago) that Sabrina would be coming to DVD, but at the time we thought it was going to be the sixteen "Sabrina" cartoons from the 1970 Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies incarnation of the show. Instead, this release will consist of the 1971 Saturday broadcasts, where our teenage witch was the focus of the series. Nor should this release get confused with the 1999 Sabrina the Animated Series (produced by DiC instead of Filmation, and a spin-off of the live-action Melissa Joan Hart "TGIF" series).
For cartoon buffs, this ought to be a treat to include in your collection. Jane Webb (who provided voices for MANY characters in Filmation's productions, including Betty and Veronica in the various Archie shows) voices Sabrina. Her cat, Salem, is voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc (Looney Tunes, Flintstones, Jetsons), and other voices include legends like "voice god" Frank Welker (Transformers, Scooby-Doo, Futurama), Don Messick (Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, Smurfs), and the great comic actor Larry Storch (The Larry Storch Show, F-Troop, The Ghost Busters). We expect extras to be inlcuded on this release (since extras have been included on similar "Archie" DVD releases from Genius), but we don't have the details about them just yet. Nor do we have cover art, but stay tuned. For now, here is ER's description of the program, just to jog your memory:
The original one and only "Sabrina" - she's no ordinary girl, she's a teenage witch!
Life as a typical teenager is tough enough - but when you have magical powers, things can get just a little more complicated. While other teenagers are doing their homework Sabrina is practising casting spells, stirring up witches' brews and trying to keep out of trouble.
After her debut in The Archie Show, Sabrina stars in this popular spin-off show of her own, along with her cat Salem, witch Aunts Hilda and Zelda and warlock Uncle Ambrose.
