If you're an SCTV
fan, then you probably already know about the planned 5-DVD set release
on June 8th from Shout! Factory. That package will contain 9 episodes from the NBC run that started in May 1981, when the series format was stretched to 90 minutes per show. Lots of supplements have been planned for this package as well, with a list price of $89.98 (in-store prices should be discounted to the $60-$70 range).
Two months before that box arrives in stores, however, fans already have the opportunity to immediately buy the 1st and 4th discs out of that set, direct from Time-Life Video. Selling for $29.99 plus shipping, the box art for each of these are exactly the same as the main package being sold in stores this June, just with different coloring. Click here

The Time-Life DVDs are in stock right now, according to their website, and you can order it from them by clicking here
. Contents of the 1st and 4th discs - the only ones they advertise with this special - are described this way:
- SCTV Volume I
Second City Television was the sister to New York's SNL, but never lived in its shadow. This collection of ground-breaking sketches, mostly from 1981, features The Sammy Maudlin Show, 5 Neat Guys, and much more from players Eugene Levy, and others. Bonus: SCTV Remembers!
- SCTV Volume IV
The call letters SCTV lived on the lips of comedy fans everywhere from 1977-1984. Relive the laughter while Hugh Betcha's Short Story Playhouse spoofs O. Henry and Lola Heatherton presents her special Bouncin' Back To You. Bonus: The Craft of SCTV!
This might be the perfect way to go for people who are more casual fans of the show, and don't want to pop for the more extensive set. On the other hand, the price-per-disc is more attractive on the larger package, and with more DVDs comes more episodes, more supplements, plus a booklet that is exclusive to the Shout! Factory version. Sounds like a great choice, too.
Our thanks to reader Jeff Robbins for letting us know about this, and for providing background information as well.
