Before The Patriot, before A Knight's Tale, and long before Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger came to some notice in America as the star of Roar, an hour-long Fox Network series about a young man in old Ireland who is trying to unit the folk of the Celtic land to repel the invading Romans. If it sounds a bit like a television version of Braveheart (just in Ireland rather than Scotland), well, it debuted in 1997...two years after the success of the Mel Gibson film. Still, it earned quite a bit of praise at the time, and to this day has quite a large fan base!
In fact, Roar is ranked quite nicely among unreleased-to-DVD shows at TVShowsOnDVD, and our readers will be very happy to know that Universal Home Video will release this as a 3-DVD set on September 19th! For $39.98 SRP you will get 584 minutes, which should be enough for all 13 episodes of the show (including five that were unaired during the original run). Video is going to be Full Frame 1.33:1, and audio is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo (with English subtitles).
Besides Ledger, the cast includes Sebastian Roche (Odyssey 5) as "Longinus," the Roman soldier who is cursed with immortality because he is the one who stabbed Jesus on the cross with the Spear of Destiny. The setting of Roar is 400 years after the Cruxifiction, and Longinus is the adversary of Ledger's character, "Conor." Vera Farmiga (Touching Evil) is also in the cast as "Catlin," and look for guest spots from Felicity's Keri Russell, Alias' Melissa George, and - in one of the unaired episodes - Desperate Housewives' Brenda Strong. The show was created and produced by none other than Shaun Cassidy, teen idol from the '70s, singer of music hits such as "Da Doo Ron Ron" (which hit #1 on the charts), star of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (as Joe Hardy), and most recently the creator of another short-lived series: Invasion.
Stay tuned for cover art, and extras (if any) for this release.
