21 years after
Red Dwarf first debuted, and 10 years after the last broadcasts were aired, the program came back to life two weeks ago today with Easter weekend airings in the U.K. of the three-part reunion miniseries
Red Dwarf - Back to Earth. Rimmer (Chris Barrie), Lister (Craig Charles), Cat (Danny John-Jules) and Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) were all back for these, the first installments of
Red Dwarf ever shot in high definition.
Even before
Red Dwarf - Back to Earth was broadcast, it was known that fans in the U.K. would get a DVD release just a couple of months afterward, "packed with goodies." What about State-side fans of the epic space sitcom, though? Relax! According to
BBC America's blog at their online shop, we'll see it in 2009: "
In the U.S. and Canada, we expect to see a pristine DVD with loads of extras before the year ends." Be sure to head over to that link for more info, including a video clip of an interview with 3 of the stars!
And what about a Blu-ray release to go with that, since the episodes were shot in high definition? We asked around a bit this morning, and while we're given to understand that it's on the minds of the folks at BBC Video, there has been no final decision made about it yet. We'll update you on further developments of this title, though, so stay tuned!
