For months now we've been telling you all about Time Life's upcoming release of The Real Ghostbusters - The Complete Series
on DVD. The 25-disc set, available exclusively online via Time Life
, will contain all 147 episodes of the classic animated series, plus a gigantic list of bonus material. You can read about much of that bonus material in the press release
, and find out more in this report
...a report which also announced that this set would be the largest "SteelBook" release ever, with 5 of the special SteelBook cases all bundled together inside of a "Firehouse" package that you, the fans, voted for
With the ship date of November 15th
closing in, Time Life has - at last! - finalized the packaging for both the firehouse and the SteelBooks, and we've got a look at those for you today. A LOT of looks, actually! The first shot you'll see below, the "beauty shot," contains the open firehouse, the SteelBooks inside and outside the firehouse, and a look at the discs. Below that we've got an exclusive close-up look at the SteelBook packages with the Volume 1 set open, and the Volume 5 set cover partially obscured. Time Life also sent over the art for the 5 SteelBooks separately, and we have close-ups of the firehouse, both open and closed, for you as well. Don't forget that the pictures on the firehouse exterior are lenticular, and will change depending on the angle you view them at.
Before we get to the pictures, though, we also should mention what a number of fans have begun to spot at some online retailers: a listing for a January 20th DVD release in stores for The Real Ghostbusters - Volume 1
. This is a separate retail release of the first 30 episodes (780 minutes), plus extras that include a booklet, episode introductions, 5 on-camera commentaries and a featurette, at a list price of $39.95 SRP. Yes, this is the same material that will be in the "Volume 1" SteelBook inside of Time Life's The Complete Series
release, just without the SteelBook packaging.
As you make your purchasing decision about this show, keep a few things in mind. The forty-dollar list price of the retail sets translates to roughly $200...or about $20 more than getting the Complete Series
release all in one shot via Time Life. True that retailers will discount that to a lower price, but we wonder whether it's worth the savings? The retail releases are going to be spread out among a 12-month to 18-month long period, so it will be a long time before you own every episode if you go the "in store" route. more importantly, the direct purchase of the 25-DVD set is the only way to get the Firehouse package, the SteelBooks, the big 52-page collectible booklet and the bonus DVD (disc #25), which contains the very rare pilot for The Real Ghostbusters
. If you're a big fan of the series, then it's worth it to go to the trouble to get the big set directly from Time Life. And don't forget that Time Life will allow you to spread out your payments into four easier-to-deal-with installments.
