Last week we
let you know that Amazon.com was taking early pre-purchases for
Pushing Daisies - The Complete 1st Season on DVD. Their
order listing showed a "flat" picture of the cover art, and provided a cost of $29.98 SRP (currently discounted to $18.99) for a 3-disc set, but has had no other information. This left fans wondering about what the exact release date would be, and also wondering about extras and specs.
This morning Warner decided to kick off the Memorial Day holiday weekend by formally announcing the title. They confirmed a 3-DVD set for $29.98 SRP, coming out on
September 16th. And, just to toss in a surprise ingredient to this pie recipe, they also announced that a Blu-ray Disc version would come out of the oven day-and-date with the DVD edition. That high definition 3-disc version (on single-layer "BD-25" discs) will cost just $39.98 SRP.
Both will come with all 9 episodes of the wonderful, quirky first season. Also included is a bonus Featurette called "Pie Time: Time For Pie". It's described on the back of the DVD box (see below) as a "Delicious, Interactive Featurette with Flavorful, Fresh-Baked Pie Slices as your Entree and Cast/Creative Team Members Dishing Forkfuls of Series Secrets".
Both versions include widescreen video, with the Blu-ray version in high-def 1080p resolution. Audio specs in Warner's early announcement appear to be incomplete: the listing for both the DVD and Blu-ray only say "Dolby Surround 5.1 English" so far. However, the back of the DVD box shows it also sports a Portuguese Dolby Stereo audio track as well. We're betting the Blu-ray also takes the sound up a notch, too. Subtitles, per the DVD rear box art, are in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Thai.
Although we're
still waiting on box art for the Blu-ray Disc version, the studio has kindly sent over packaging artwork - front and back (including a peek at the disc art) - for the DVD edition of
Pushing Daisies - The Complete 1st Season. Here it is, following Warner's description of the set (
UPDATE: Blu-ray Disc package art, from a late-day e-announcement, is now added to the very bottom):
Every not-so-often, along comes a show that's different. Wonderfully different. Pushing Daisies, TV Guide's Matt Roush writes, "restores my faith in TV's ability to amuse, enchant and entertain." It's the story of Ned, a lonely pie maker whose touch can reanimate the dead. Cool, but there's a hitch. If Ned touches the person again, the miracle is reversed. If he doesn't, a bystander goes toes up. What to do? Easy: Team with a private eye, bring murder victims back just long enough to discover whodunit, and collect the rewards. Things go well until Ned's boyhood sweetie is the next dear departed, and he can't resist bringing her back for keeps! Dig the wit, style and quirky romance: If you're not laughing, you may need a visit from Ned.
