In November, AMC presented The Prisoner miniseries, a reinterpretation of the British 1960s cult hit series that starred and was co-created by Patrick McGoohan. Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ , The Thin Red Line) played the role of Six; and two-time Oscar nominee Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code) co-starred as Two.
A man, known as Six, finds himself inexplicably trapped in The Village, with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are also identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and - most importantly - how he can escape.
Warner Home Video has announced the
March 23rd DVD release of
The Prisoner, the 2009 remake mini-series which aired on the AMC channel last month. The 3-disc set will run 276 minutes, and include all six episodes: "Arrival," "Harmony," "Anvil," "Darling," "Schizoid" and "Checkmate." Extras (if any) and detailed specs haven't been released yet, nor has package art, but stay tuned. Cost is $29.98 SRP.
The mini-series was broadcast in high definition, so why no Blu-ray Disc announcement?
Poor ratings, and a lack of TV-on-BD traction with anything other than the most popular shows are likely to blame. The apparent concern is that retailers would shy away from carrying it, out of worry that consumers wouldn't pay the extra cost for a BD release of this title, so the studio has held off on a high-def version for now. However, that doesn't mean a Blu-ray release couldn't occur later on, if the demand was there for it.
Update: The studio has release early artwork, which is subject to change, along with extras; it's posted below:
- A six-part look "Inside The Prisoner"
- Commentaries on 2 Key Episodes
- Unaired Scenes
- Featurettes on the Production and Story
- The Prisoner comic-Con Panel
- Interview with Sir Ian McKellen
