The original 1991 U.K. program
Prime Suspect, starring Dame Helen Mirren (
Excalibur, 2010, Calendar Girls, The Queen, RED), is back in the spotlight these days as NBC ramps up toward a September debut of an American version of the show starring Maria Bello (
ER, Coyote Ugly, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor). And it doesn't hurt that Dame Helen, at age 66, was just
voted in a poll by L.A. Fitness as "Body of the Year," beating out such beauties as Elle MacPherson, Kelly Brook and Jennifer Lopez!
The British show ran for 5 straight series (seasons) from 1991-96, then Mirren took a break from playing DCI Jane Tennison, before returning to the role for the sixth series in 2003, and the final series in 2006. By the time
Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act came to DVD, it was put out by Acorn Media. The previous six season sets were released instead by HBO Home Video, but those 2003-2004 sets have all been discontinued. A year ago, Acorn released
Prime Suspect - The Complete Collection, with all seven series.
Now Acorn is going back and re-releasing the first six series of the program as individual season sets, to make them more affordable to buyers who want to purchase them in smaller bites. They are beginning in a few weeks, on
August 23rd, with
Prime Suspect - Series 1 and
Prime Suspect - Series 2 sets.
Each of these series consists of 2 episodes, broken down into a "Part 1" and a "Part 2" and when combined clock in at about 200 minutes per season set.
Series 1 includes appearances by Ralph Fiennes (
The English Patient, the
Harry Potter films), Tom Wilkinson (
Michael Clayton, Shakespeare in Love) and Zoƫ Wanamaker (
Poirot, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone);
Series 2 includes Colin Salmon (
Keen Eddie, Die Another Day) Each release is priced at $24.98 SRP, but can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com at a discount. Here's a look at the cover art for them:
