A few days ago we brought you Warner Home Video's
official announcement that
September 30th will see the release of
Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3: 1941-1943 on a 2-DVD set. We reported that it would contain 32 black-and-white shorts, originally produced for the theater but aired countless times on television in various
Popeye programs.
Fans asked what those episodes would be, and whether any bonus material would be included on this package. We've confirmed through our industry sources, who spoke on condition of remaining anonymous, that documentaries and bonus shorts are being planned for this release, but haven't been set in stone yet.
Following up on his
interview comments recently, we asked Jerry Beck if he would go on the record with any details about this. Jerry declined to do so at this time, as plans for extras have not been finalized. We certainly don't blame him a bit! We'll keep in touch with him though, and keep an eye on his CartoonBrew.com blog site.
However, our anonymous industry source did provide us with the following list of shorts included on this release. The earlier titles come from Fleischer Studios; titles that were later produced from Famous Studios are indicated via the name of the director enclosed in parentheses. Here's what you'll get:
- Problem Pappy
- Quiet! Pleeze
- Olive's Sweepstakes Ticket
- Flies Ain't Human
- Popeye Meets Rip Van Winkle
- Olive's Boithday Presink
- Child Psykolojiky
- Pest Pilot
- I'll Never Crow Again
- The Mighty Navy
- Nix on Hypnotricks
- Kickin' the Conga 'Round
- Blunder Below
- Fleets Of Stren'th
- Pip-eye, Pup-eye, Poop-eye and Peep-eye
- Olive Oyl And Water Don't Mix
- Many Tanks
- Baby Wants a Bottleship
- You're a Sap, Mr. Jap (Dan Gordon)
- Alona on the Sarong Seas (Isadore Sparber)
- A Hull of a Mess (Sparber)

- Spinach Fer Britain (Sparber)
- Seein' Red, White 'N' Blue
- Too Weak to Work (Sparber)
- A Jolly Good Furlough (Gordon)
- Ration Fer The Duration (Kneitel)
- The Hungry Goat (Gordon)
- Happy Birthdaze (Gordon)
- Wood-Peckin' (Sparber)
- Cartoons Ain't Human (Kneitel)
Note that two color cartoons, produced at the end of the 1943 run, are NOT included on this collection (because this set completes the run of black-and-white shorts). We presume that "Her Honor the Mare" and "The Marry-Go-Round" will be included on the fourth DVD collection.
Also note that three of the six "banned"
Popeye cartoons ARE included in this release: "You're A Sap, Mr. Jap", "Scrap The Japs" and "Seein' Red, White 'N' Blue" will all be found here. All 32 shorts on this set are completely remastered and unedited. Sounds like this is a must-have for any
Popeye fan, collector or armchair animation historian. And you can pre-order it today at the button link below!
Also, don't forget that this coming Tuesday (6/17) sees the DVD release of
Popeye the Sailor - Volume 2: 1938-1940; you'll want it, too.
