The 2007 releases of
Planet Earth on
DVD, Blu-ray and the now-defunct HD-DVD formats set a new standard in home video releases of documentary TV mini-series, so how could the folks at BBC Video ever hope to improve on that? By putting in what they left out the first time around! And according to the
BBC America Shop blog, as posted this past Friday, they are planning to do exactly that!
New DVD and Blu-ray releases are being planned for
Planet Earth - The Complete Collection: Special Edition. No timeframe for the release has been set, but the indication is that they hope to get them to fans before the year is over (and if they don't, then we're sure they'll take the extra time to make these even better!). Among the new-to-home-video material (some in standard def, rather than high-def, because that's all they have available) which they specifically mention are the "
Planet Earth - The Future" documentary, some Making-Of featurettes, bonus programs
Planet Earth’s Greatest Moments,
Snow Leopard: Beyond the Myth (described as "a 50-minute look at the elusive cat in the mountains of Pakistan,"
Secrets of the Mayan Underworld and
Elephant Nomads of the Namib Desert.
There are also new audio commentaries, isolated music and effects option, and a preview of the upcoming documentary
Frozen Planet, from Alastair Fothergill (exec producer of
Planet Earth). If you're up for a double dip, this sounds like one that will be loaded! Stay tuned for updates with package art, pricing and the street date.
