We
reported last December that the 1981 HBO special,
The Pee-wee Herman Show is coming to DVD from Image Entertainment. This is the performance that acted as the "pilot" for the 1986 regular series,
Pee-wee's Playhouse...and fans of that show have long-wanted to get a DVD of the special that inspired the popular show (even if that special is much more adult-oriented than the regular program ended up being).
Now Image Entertainment has finally provided the cover art for this release, which you can see below. Also, it is important to know that the release date has been rescheduled. Previously planned for June 6th, a very crowded date release-wise, the street date is now changed to
July 18th. Amazon.com reflects that in their
pre-release listing, but apparently that listing isn't set up to take pre-orders just yet. It should soon, though, since Image is making this official. So just keep an eye on that. Here's the official description, followed by the cover art:
Not quite a children's show, The Pee-wee Herman Show is slyly subversive, a little bit naughty and always outrageous. Making its premiere as a midnight show on February 7th, 1981, at The Groundlings Theatre in Hollywood, the performance then moved to the famed Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip where it was filmed as part of HBO's new series On Location. Conceived as an homage to children's television programs of the 1950's and 60's, this live stage production features original music, puppets, a cartoon, a short educational film and Pee-wee's hilarious live-action friends.
